We are delighted to extend a warm invitation to you to join us on Sunday, February 9th, 2025, at 10:30 am for a special service featuring Dr. The Hon. Jean Augustine as our guest speaker. Dr. Augustine made history as the first Black woman elected to Canada’s Parliament, where she served from 1993 to 2006. Throughout her distinguished career, she held several significant roles, including Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister, Minister for Multiculturalism and the Status of Women, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, and Deputy Speaker.
Among her many legislative achievements, Dr. Augustine is perhaps best known for her pivotal role in introducing the motion that led to the official recognition of February as Black History Month across Canada. This monumental achievement continues to be celebrated annually across the nation. Additionally, Dr. Augustine’s leadership in advancing the “Famous Five” Motion, which honoured the fight for women’s suffrage in Canada, has left a lasting legacy of advocacy for women’s rights and equality.
